Svartifoss
Svartifoss (english: Black Fall) is a waterfall in Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park and is one of the most popular sights in the park. It is surrounded by dark lava columns, which gave rise to its name. Other well-known columnar jointing formations are seen throughout Iceland, including a small cave on the beach of Reynisdrangar, which is very beautiful.
The base of this waterfall is noteworthy for its sharp rocks. New hexagonal column sections break off faster than the falling water wears down the edges.
These basalt columns have provided inspiration for Icelandic architects, most visibly in the Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavík.
Hiking Route:
The trail starts next to Skaftafell Visitor Centre and is well indicated. The first 250 meters go through the campground but the trail then turns right and uphill. Follow the signs until you arrive at a viewpoint above the waterfall. Continue down into the ravine, across the footbridge, and climb up the basalt column steps on the other side of the canyon. We definitely recommend that you continue on this trail to the viewpoint at Sjónarnípa. The view over the glacier is amazing and you wont regret the walk when you see the view.
